Advocates Begin Fundraising Effort

PORTLAND, Ore. – In the latest development surrounding the proposed demolition of the 111-year-old church in the King neighborhood parties interested in preserving the church and adapting it for reuse have begun a campaign to raise money for a potential purchase of the building from owner and potential developer Peter Kusyk.

A GoFundMe campaign has begun as a platform for donors to give money for preservation of the church.

“We are attempting to raise $600,000 (the amount the developer has offered to sell it for) in order to both preserve the home’s historic and architectural integrity, and transform it into a space that will serve Portland’s Black community,” the petition, started by Rachel Gilmer, reads. “We will lead a community-based process for identifying how the space will be used, perhaps turning it into a community center.”

The GoFundMe page does not give a timeline for when Kusyk would require payment by, but the demolition fence has already been erected suggesting demolition is coming soon.
