Block of Homes to Be Razed by University of Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – Six neighboring single-family homes on a block in the University Park neighborhood of North Portland will be demolished, joining a house on the same block that was razed several years ago and likely signaling a new construction project by the institution of higher learning.

The houses are located at and near the corner of North Willamette Boulevard and Portsmouth Avenue.

UP Demolitions

All of the single-family homes on the pictured block will be demolished by University of Portland in the near future, with the exception of one house at the top center which was demolished in 2011.

Earlier this month the Bureau of Development Services received applications for demolition of six homes on the block.

The upcoming demolitions are as follows:

A single-family home at 6605 N Portsmouth Ave. built in 1948, with a demolition delay expiring July 13. The house was purchased by the university in 2005 for $330,000.

Directly to the northeast on the corner of North Portsmouth Avenue and Willamette Boulevard, a single-family home at 5308 N Willamette Blvd. built in 1945 and purchased by the university in 2007 for $315,000, with a demolition delay expiring July 13.

Next door to the north of the corner house, a single-family home built in 1960 at 5316 N Willamette Blvd. has a demolition delay period ending July 13. The house was purchased by the university in 2003 for $200,000.

A single-family home at 5328 N Willamette Blvd. built in 1905 just to the northwest of the previous house, was demolished in 2011 after having sold to the university in 1998 for $150,000.

Neighboring that house, a single-family home built in 1926 at 5406 N Willamette Blvd. will end its demolition delay period on July 13. It sold to the university in 2002 for $150,000.

And finally, to the northwest of that home a single-family house located at 5414 N Willamette Blvd. built in 1955 will be razed sometime after its delay period expires July 13.

City records state that the vacant 3,000-square-foot field on the corner lot northwest of that house formerly held a one-story commercial building that was demolished in 2003.

All of the properties are owned by University of Portland. There are no new construction permits filed at this time, so it is unclear what will be replacing the seven homes.

The applicant on the demolitions is Jim Kuffner of University of Portland, while the contractor is Dan Riehl of Dan Riehl Excavating Inc.

The rest of the block is occupied by a residential student housing building called Haggerty Hall built in 2001 and home to 16 apartment units.

The demolition delays for all the homes with open demolition permits expire in mid-July.
