Sackhoff Demolishes 91-Year-Old House, Plans Duplex

PORTLAND, Ore. – Next door to a new five-story, 50-unit apartment building, a 91-year-old house has been torn down to make way for a duplex by the same developer.

Located at 123 SE 27th Ave., the house was built in 1924.

It is part of a 13,810-square-foot lot that was sold by Lars Topelmann to Dennis Sackhoff‘s Urban Development Group in 2013 for $1,050,000. It had previously sold in 1995 for $95,000, according to county data.

The house was on the same tax lot as a 1,251-square-foot structure that was demolished in late 2014. The Portland Chronicle previously reported incorrectly that the 1924 house had already been demolished.

The rest of the property is now home to a five-story apartment building with 50 residential units and ground floor parking.

Urban Development Group applied for and received a demolition permit for the 1924 house early this year.

On July 28 the city received an application for construction of a two-story duplex with a tuck-under garage on the property. The applicant was David Mullens of Urban Development Group. The apartment building takes up the rest of the property, suggesting the duplex would have to be built on the site of the 91-year-old house.

While the demolition has occurred, city records list the permit status as “expired.”

“An issued permit will expire if 180 days pass without an approved inspection,” the Bureau of Development Services explained.
