Hawthorne Tree Cut Complete, Demolition Comes Next

PORTLAND, Ore. – The felling of several large sequoia trees on Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard has moved forward following several weeks in which the bare lower trunks of the trees remained standing while the upper portions had been removed.

The trees were located on property that is planned to be developed into a four-story, 30-unit apartment complex. Two lots at and near the corner of Southeast 44th Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard sold to The Truman LLC, registered to Don Mutal at 0425 SW Iowa St., for $500,000 in October.

The tree cut began Dec. 4 when the limbs were stripped from the three sequoia trees and the top halves were cut down. They remained in this condition for several weeks, during which time someone affixed a sign reading “run forest run” to the top of one tree.

The trees are now completely cut down and are lying cut up in the yard.

The billboard in the yard will be demolished, as will the two adjacent houses at 4334 SE Hawthorne Blvd. and 1515 SE 44th Ave. Demolition permits for all three structures have been issued.
